"Should Fathers Play an Active Role in Newborn Care?"

Updated: Apr 13, 2024

Absolutely! Involvement of fathers from the very beginning is crucial for the well-being and development of both the child and the family. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Bonding: Early involvement allows fathers to form a strong emotional bond with their newborn. Skin-to-skin contact, cuddling, and spending time together create a foundation for a lifelong relationship.

  2. Do not Just assist Mothers: Fathers are equal parents that are capable of diaper changes, feeding, and soothing the baby, but also giving the baby a chance to breastfeed when the mother is available. Do not assume that mothers have any special powers that you lack. The only exception would be the lack of breasts in the case of breastfeeding. I was involved in the care of all my children from day one and it has been rewarding.

  3. Learning and Confidence: Being hands-on from day one helps fathers learn about baby care. It boosts their confidence and reduces anxiety, making them better equipped to handle parenting challenges.

  4. Shared Responsibilities: When fathers actively participate, it promotes a sense of shared responsibility. This teamwork benefits the entire family and strengthens the family unit.

  5. Positive Impact on Child Development: Research shows that children with involved fathers tend to have better cognitive, emotional, and social development. Fathers contribute unique perspectives and parenting styles.

So, to all the dads out there: Get involved early, cherish those precious moments, and be an active part of your child’s journey! 🌟👨‍👶
